Nick Stahl: The Search Turns to Skid Row

Nobody but the most determined pessimist could have predicted that Nick Stahl would wind up on Skid Row. Rocketing out of small-town Texas at age 13 to become an acclaimed young actor, he overcame youthful problems with alcohol and drugs to grow into a seemingly well-adjusted adult, a movie journeyman who could appear in big-budget blockbusters and exquisite indie gems with equal aplomb, winning over directors in the process.

But on Thursday, Los Angeles Missing Persons detectives narrowed their search for Stahl–who portrayed John Connor in his most high-profile film, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines–to the city’s most perilous precinct based on information from his wife. According to Roseann Marie Stahl, who has been married to Stahl since 2009 but was estranged from him at the time of his disappearance, the actor was known to frequent Skid Row in recent years in pursuit of hard core drugs. And it wasn’t uncommon for the actor, 32, to disappear on drug binges.

“She admitted that he had gone to Skid Row [in the past]. He goes off for days at a time,” said Det. Carmine Sasso, the officer in charge of the LAPD’s adult missing person’s unit. “We are getting the information out to our patrol officers where Nick might frequent. We are trying to locate him.”
The news came as a shock to a number of the actor’s Hollywood peers such as writer-director D.W. Brown who cast Stahl in 2011’s indie psychological thriller On the Inside. “He’s such a sweet, classy guy, to think of Nick on Skid Row is so weird,” Brown told The Daily Beast. “There was never any indication he abused anything, even alcohol. He had clear eyes; no lateness or bad temperament. He was a sensitive poet at heart. I could see him more on a college campus than Skid Row.”

Source: Nick Stahl Has “Gone Missing Before,” but Never for This Long

Nick Stahl had exhibited signs of “inner turmoil” before his wife reported him missing—and his family isn’t giving up on the Terminator: Rise of the Machines star.

“He has been having a tough time for a couple of months,” a source close to the actor exclusively tells E! News. “He’s an incredible individual, an amazing father—but addiction is something he has always struggled with.”

And, the source adds, this isn’t the first time Stahl has seemingly disappeared.

“He has gone missing for a day before,” the source tells us, “but never longer than that. He always gets in touch. This is the longest time he has been away. He doesn’t have a cell phone on him, so there is no way to contact him.”

Witnesses confirmed to E! News yesterday that they had seen the Carnivale star helping a friend move at a West Hollywood apartment building last week. In the missing-person report his wife, Rose, filed on Monday, she stated that she last saw him on May 9.

Stahl and his estranged wife have a 2-year-old daughter, Marlo. Roseann filed court documents in February insisting that her husband only be allowed supervised visits with their child and that he undergo regular drug testing.

“He works so hard at staying sober, but it’s a constant struggle,” the source says. “He has been to skid row [in downtown Los Angeles] before and that’s why the police are looking there. Everyone just wants him to come home.”

LAPD officers have been showing Stahl’s photo around the skid-row neighborhood and asking locals to keep an eye out. Foul play is not suspected at this time, according to police.

Nick Stahl: LAPD search of skid row fails to find missing actor

Los Angeles police said Thursday that they’ve had no luck so far finding Nick Stahl, the actor who played John Connor in “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.” He has been missing for more than a week.

LAPD officers have been carrying a photo of the actor during their beat work in downtown L.A., hoping to find him on the street or find some who knows him. Stahl had been frequenting skid row.

Stahl’s wife, Rose Murphy, reported him missing shortly after 10 a.m. Monday to Hollywood Division officers, spokesman Richard French said. Foul play is not suspected at this time, he said.

She said the last time she saw him was May 9.

Murphy filed court papers in February, saying that the couple had been separated since January. She asked that Stahl’s visitations with their daughter, Marlo, 2, be limited. She also asked for proof he hadn’t used drugs within 24 hours before seeing her, KTLA-TV reported.

Nick Stahl: No foul play suspected in actor’s disappearance

As Los Angeles police continued to look for Nick Stahl, the actor who played John Connor in “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines,” authorities said they didn’t believe foul play was involved.

Stahl had been frequenting skid row, and LAPD officials said officers who work the downtown beat have been given copies of his photo and told keep an eye out for him.

LAPD officials said officers thought they had a possible sighting on Wednesday but that turned out to be a false report.

The director who worked with Stahl on the movie “388 Arletta Avenue” told People magazine that the actor showed no signs of being in trouble.

“He was fantastic — not a single problem,” director Randall Cole told the magazine “He was a total professional and knew his lines. There was no diva behavior at all.”

Nick Stahl: All About His Disappearance – And His Past

BY MICHELLE TAUBER AND HOWARD BREUER

In his most recent film, Nick Stahl plays a man looking for his missing wife.

In a bizarre real-life parallel, Stahl is now missing. While police continue their search for the 32-year-old actor, who was last seen on May 9, the director of 388 Arletta Avenue says he saw no signs of trouble when he shot the thriller with Stahl in Toronto a year and a half ago.

“He was fantastic – not a single problem,” director Randall Cole tells PEOPLE. “He was a total professional and knew his lines. There was no diva behavior at all.” Nor was there any hint of turmoil between Stahl and his wife Rose, who visited the set along with their then-infant daughter, Marlo. But court documents filed earlier this year tell a different story.

In February, Rose filed a petition calling for child support from her husband. Those papers also state that she would have their daughter 100 percent of the time and Stahl would have eight hours of supervised visitation per week. He was also required to take a drug test within 24 hours of each visitation.

Back in 2010, however, the couple “looked happy together,” says Cole. “Whatever is going on now, it wasn’t happening then. He was totally on his game. He is not an actor who stays in character between takes. He was just himself, goofing around with the crew. He was a pleasant person to be around.”
Personal Issues

Detectives have been searching for Stahl since the actor’s wife, Rose, reported him missing to the Los Angeles Police Department Monday morning.

“We are tracking down a few leads and using internal sources with information we have to see if we can quickly locate him,” L.A.P.D. Detective Carmine S. Sasso, who is handling the case, tells PEOPLE.

The actor, says Det. Sasso, “has got some personal issues that he’s trying to work through. The family asks that this be kept very low-key, and that affects our ability to successfully solve these cases.”

And what of reports that substance abuse issues are involved in Stahl’s disappearance?

“In general, [this case] is similar to a lot of our adult missing persons cases,” says Det. Sasso. “Of the 14,000 missing persons cases I’ve handled over the past four years, there’s a very good percentage of those involving drug issues and a separation from families. The vast majority of them have been successfully solved. Hopefully this one will be too.”

A Strange Limbo

Stahl, a Texas native who began acting at age 4 and got his big break in Mel Gibson’s 1993 drama The Man Without a Face, has acknowledged past struggles with drugs and alcohol.

When another onetime child star, actor Brad Renfro, died from a heroin overdose at age 25 in 2008, Stahl said he had seen warning signs when the pair costarred in 2001′s Bully.

“There was a lot of recreational drinking and things like that going on during the shoot,” Stahl told The San Francisco Chronicle in 2008. “For someone like me, who has been through drugs and drinking, it was pretty easy to spot that Brad had problems.”

Stahl also admitted that he had struggled as a child star.

“It warps your ability to find a certain identity,” he said. “You are in a strange limbo. You are working in an adult world but being very young, you are not a part of it. You can’t be included in it really. Then you go home and because you’re with your friends not all that often, you’re not fully a part of that, either.”

And the glare of the spotlight didn’t help.

“There are certain superficial elements of the business,” he said, “kind of putting on a good face even though you might be in pain.”

Nick Stahl is missing

I know that I haven’t posted about some personal stories about Nick that has been in the press in the past few months but this is more important than anything, especially to Nick, Rose, Marlo and their family.

Nick Stahl’s Wife Says He Is Missing

Where is Nick Stahl?

TMZ.com reports that his wife, Rose, filed a missing persons report with the Los Angeles Police Department on Monday. According to her report, Stahl, 32, was last seen on May 9.

UPDATE: LAPD confirms that Stahl’s wife reported him missing at 10 a.m. Monday morning. “I can confirm that he’s missing,” LAPD Officer Rosario Herrera tells PEOPLE. “And, as of now, he is still missing.”

In February, Rose allegedly filed court papers saying the couple had been separated since January, and asked a judge to limit Stahl’s visitations with their 2-year-old daughter, Marlo, to eight supervised hours per week.

She also reportedly stipulated that the Terminator 3 actor pass a test proving he hadn’t used drugs or alcohol in the previous 24 hours before seeing Marlo.
